This is what I feared...when the federal government gave the airlines the "safety" loophole to deny compensation, I figured airlines would shoehorn pretty much anything they possibly could into it.

The danger is that pretty much EVERYTHING related to the operation of a flight has at least some connection to safety, so it's a catch-all that is a godsend for the airlines.
