This. I also participate in the Reddit forum at times and it’s amazing how often misinformation or partial stories just take a life over there.

The official policy is this doesn’t happen. While I believe the story happened (sort of), I don’t believe it’s widespread. If I had to guess, the gate agent did a seat count and saw an empty one. The OP in that thread should have stood their ground and forced a double IDB.

Re comfort plus. You’re trading width for legroom. I weigh more than you and Im 5’11” and would take the legroom any day all day. But it’s a personal decision and only you can decide what you prefer more.

You won’t be able to convert a cancelled seat into a comfort plus upgrade offer for both passengers. Either you just cancel the seat and take a credit for future travel and separately pay for the upgrade, or you can cancel the seat and then use the credit towards a completely new ticket that includes economy plus. Lots of details in glossing over.
