In 1995 my Madrid taxi broke down on the way to a bus (to take me from Madrid to Cuellar - in hindsight I should have indeed taken the train to Segovia and then taken a bus from Segovia to Cuellar) and that taught me to allow for more time. When I rideshare from east bay to sf (or reverse) I now only use the big rideshare (uber XL) because regular uberX drivers aren’t consistently good on distance.
I've had a reasonable % of UberX requests with XL drivers showing up - most likely when it is a slow time in my area. If I'm going to SFO alone, even with a big piece of luggage, a regular car is fine (and frequently a lot less $$$ from Berkeley) and they're probably happy to get an XL ride from SFO. When I get surprised with an XL, bonus.
