Refund on ticket due to death of immediate family member

Hi,

Hoping someone can help me with this situation. I booked an SFO-HNL-SFO ticket on AS. I paid extra upfront to make it refundable, but unfortunately I made a change to the itinerary and ended up making the ticket non-refundable (didn't read the fine print on the online change website!)

I have a death in my family (immediate and close family member) post my purchase and am currently abroad. I want to get a refund on my ticket, but AS reservations agents are asking for contact info for a funeral home to verify. We don't use funeral homes here and funeral services are private home affairs. I've HUACA many times to reservations agents have the same answer. I can provide a temporary death certificate as proof (final ones takes weeks to process). I wrote to the customer relations team but have not heard back.

Does anyone have any experience with this sort of situation? It was a pretty expensive ticket and I do not want a flight credit
