But yes, all airside without clearing immigration. I had a 1h40 connection, landed on time, and was boarding GA by the time I finally got to the correct gate in terminal H.
The process involves lots of x-rays, staff calling other staff, sitting alone on a transfer bus taking 25min, and waiting for people with the right authority / physical key to show up and let you through a door. But it seemed like all of the staff knew what had to happen, even though I’m sure they don’t get *many* pax making a connection like this. The staff isn’t that talkative either, don’t expect to get a full rundown of the entire process up front. You’re basically getting handed off from one person to the next until you’re there. “Sit here and wait for someone to show up” is a common instruction.
I chatted with the purser on board GA, and apparently I was the first transfer pax through JED she had ever come across
Tl;dr: for a T1 -> Hajj transfer, tell the transfer desk you’re connecting and follow their process, and you’ll be fine.
I can’t speak for the inverse direction, might be slightly problematic since it didn’t look like the Hajj terminal was built with transfers in mind.
Very interesting. I’m doing the exact same terminal switch and with the same airlines. It’s a EuroBonus award trip where everything is on the same itinerary. Going there on Monday.
I’ve been very unlucky in getting the air transit visa that has to be approved by the saudi embassy in Sweden (my country) and they don’t understand this and think it’s completely unnecessary. So that’s probably $35 down the drain. Don’t really want to pay over $100 for an e-visa either on top of that now.
i’ve read about the treatment that you got before and some other that didn’t. Did you travel in business? Reason I ask is that could play in when getting a specially organized transfer like that.
My layover is 2h 40min so I should make it either way if I need to do the VOA but you never know what’s gonna happen.
Also, a little silly of me asking but do you remember the exact way you explained to the staff you needed to make this particular transfer? Did you show them the itinerary (if so, from which airline? Printed out or digitally?). Sometimes small things, how you present it can make a pretty big difference when dealing with airline staff I’ve learned.
Will try to copy you as good as I can to hopefully get this special kind of airside transfer as well!
