Historically, I have been able to use my miles to book tickets for others using my account & miles. They do not get my status but I can make the arrangements and book directly from my account. Today, I went in to book a ticket for my daughter and the website will not let me select her or change the traveler from me to anyone else. Is this a policy change that I am unaware of or is there a problem with the website? I have a call in to the EXP line but WX appears to be causing some significant delays in getting a call back.
from my experience doing the same thing you ended up doing over the phone, when you tab thru the fields to put in the passenger name, your own account info will be pre-filled in (assuming you're logged in to your account).
as soon as you tab to your AA account # and clear it or delete or backspace on it, a pop up instantly asks you if you want to delete all the pre-filled info and book for someone else.
THAT'S when you could enter your daughter's info. If you stay logged in to your account, when booking for your daughter at this point, the miles will come out of your account.
If instead you put it on HOLD, and make note of the PNR, then whoever's account logs in and searches for the PNR/Last Name combination to find the flight, THAT logged in account is the one where the miles come from for your daughter's ticket.
