From YVR doesn't look like there is anything better than that MEX option. You could look at further nested trips from MEX with AM. Or travel economy to CUN or TIJ/SAN and look for nested trips with AM from there.
Sad thing about some/many of the AM fares ex-YVR is that they're so expensive that BC starts to look attractive as far as XP goes. What nested trips are there? Mexico to somewhere int'l?
