the can try , but the fact you made it through to the gate in time to board would make their decision to offload you, rather than override conformance, very weak
Were the biometrics taken for the old flight or the new flight? if the old flight, then i would also recommend that, long before boarding starts, you check with someone form BA that the biometrics were copied over to the new flight !!!
