It was explained to me by an AC Service Rep at YYZ that, "it depends". If one's itinerary was "booked in J", but includes a segment on an aircraft which lacks "J seating", one still has access to MLL at every stop along the way, including the first MLL.
And sure enough, my own travel experiences have confirmed this.
