Baggage query codeshare basic economy fare

Hi,

I'm due to fly in a few days and I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out the baggage rules!

I booked a ticket with American Airlines from AKL - LHR. The flight includes a layover in JFK, all on one ticket. The fare was a basic economy fare, no checked bags included.

I have realized that the first flight AKL to JFK is a codeshare and is operated by Qantas with the code AA 7284. The second from JFK to LHR is an AA flight.

As it is a basic economy fare I have no included checked baggage and I intend to check one bag. I thought this would simply be a case of adding one and paying the $75 AA fee for the first bag. I am however unable to add a checked bag online on AA or Qantas. My Qantas app is showing a luggage allowance of 0 and will not allow me to purchase extra bags.

I have called AA and they have stated that I can add a $75 bag at the airport when I check in with Qantas.

However, I've been researching and the Qantas website states that they include no excess baggage on codeshare flights and that it would be charged at their excess baggage fee?!

Their rates are extortianate and if they charge for the flight to JFK it would cost A$300. If they charge for the whole flight it would be A$80 a kilo which we simply could not pay!!

I do not want to turn up the airport with a bag and be faced with this! I called Qantas and the advisor said they couldn't answer my question and I would have to go to the airport...

Does anyone know if my checked bag would be counted under AA rules or Qantas rules?

This is causing a lot of stress as we bought lots of Christmas presents to take back to the UK and we are now worried we'll have to abandon our bag at the airport.

Thanks
