AA apparently has plugged the eternal roll over loopholes talked about in this thread many months ago. Since June AFAIK, even you paid with added real $ paid by CC, the cancellation would only receive a Flight Credit for the full amount of the ticket value, incl the extra $ paid by CC, in one single amount.
I had trip credits that were expiring in December of this year. My original flight was Chicago to London. I booked a November 2024 Chicago to London flight that cost slightly more than the original flight, resulting in me purchasing with existing trip credits plus the extra charges with credit card (~$15/ticket). I waited two days after booking, then switched the flight to one day further in the future for both legs of the trip (when I booked the first flight, I checked various days to identify days where the trips cost about the same amount). After waiting an additional 2-3 days, I canceled this flight and received Trip Credit with an expiration date of one year from now.
