In my experience 9/10 times they don't ask. The two situations I've fallen into are:
1) The credit card in my profile being replaced with an updated expiration
2) The card not appropriately attached to my reservation. (I don't know what caused this, because from my end it looked proper).
For both types, they have not been able to select my corporate credit card from my profile or accept the Apple Pay version that I had on my phone. I had to provide a different physical card - and then deal with my ER team's nastygram about not using the company credit card.
