They had it on the printed menu for JL31 today, so I was able to sample a glass. For a baseline reference I'm really a Springbank and Talisker drinker, but do keep a couple bottles of Japanese whiskey around the house as I enjoy not only drinking the stuff, but like the value of the NAS Nikka and Kirin offerings. I enjoyed the 100yr Aniversary Hibiki Blend, but didn't find it particularly interesting. I'd liken it to drinking Kona or Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee; perfectly mellow and non offensive at a high price. I don't regret purchasing a bottle 30 October on JL5 given the price point, but I did find the Hibiki 21 offered on that flight to be a bit more interesting. However, that stuff costs considerably more and I would have a difficult time acquiring a bottle that wasn't marked up to an unreasonable price.
I have no regrets with my purchase and look forward to trying it at a lower altitude without the confines of a metal tube when I get back home in a couple of weeks.
One additional note about the Hibiki 100yr Aniversary Blend is the Bar Capri at the New Otani Hotel had two bottles on display at the entrance and one on display at the bar. They were serving it up at a price of 10,000 JPY per glass and the bottle price...well I don't recall exactly what it was, but in the words of K-2SO "It's high, it's very high".
Cheers,
