It will be fine, if it's extra stuffed you may have to squeeze it in a bit but it will still fit.

Also above you mentioned you have 5 hours and don't really mind gate checking if you have to, but keep in mind it would be gate checked all the way to your final destination in Asia, not just to JFK.
I’ve never heard of gate checking a bag to your destination in another country. I can’t even get AA to interline our bags to our SQ flight on a separate PNR.
