Those are indeed too many stops! LAX then TPE! If I were to make a stop, I personally would have preferred to stay, for example in TPE for a night or two.
To the OP: I think it may be fair to have one stop if flying to a secondary Japanese city. Also look if there is a JAL promo - they were previously offering a free domestic ticket if landing at a Japanese airport other than TYO from overseas. IIRC, fares to KIX are usually lower, although there may be limited options regarding airlines.
