I didn't realise there was a difference between what you can get online and what you get with an agent. That would explain some things on my conversation this afternoon with the call centre, I think the agent knew more than me !
One more question, is it the same for A class in First as it is in I class for Club?
It's a West Coast USA trip ';m planning and getting in First via a GUF would be most excellent.

I've successfully used my first GUF now.
Initially the agent said that the flight needed to have Avios availability in order to upgrade. But I explained what I had learned from here and that Avios availability applied only to online bookings on the web and that an agent should be able to book the upgrade into I or A class. To their great credit, the agent went to colleagues/supervisor and said that yes it should be possible. Then said to hang up and they would call back rather than me waiting on the phone.
And true enough about 20 mins later, called back with it all sorted.
Today is a happy day
