2FA code sent by email not working

BA's half hearted 2FA roll out has suddenly messed up my ability to login to BA.com and the app entirely.

When I was enrolled, the only option given was to accept login by email with a code. Better than nothing but not "proper" TOTP 2FA, I was never given the option to enroll an authenticator app or save the recovery codes.

I set my son (<12 yr old)'s account up some time afterwards and was given these options.

Since then, logging in for me worked - often needing the code by email, all of which arrived OK. I poked around every so often looking for a way to enrol TOTP or get recovery codes, never finding them.

Suddenly last week the option to receive codes by mail disappeared. Thus I can't login. The app had cached my details but anything transactional needed a code to be sent by email - which as above did not get offered as an option.
I contacted BAEC and after a 5 day delay was told by email:

"Thank you for letting us know about the difficulties you’re experiencing trying to receive emails or receive the authentication text to access your account. It should be fast and easy to do this online, so I’m very sorry it’s not worked like this for you. I'm afraid I haven't been able to fix this for you at the moment, and I've reported the problem to our systems team who have started working on a solution to correct this. I'll contact you again as soon as we have an update from them, but you're welcome to keep trying in the meantime."
Which is an appalling non response. So I now can't redeem Avios nor book flights on the app or BA.com while logged in.
Has anyone a) seen this themselves b) got any suggestions?
