Rebooked on a non-partner airline for a segment

Morning folks,

On the way back from our European vacation we missed the tight connection in Madrid due to a delay by TAP Air Portugal, the entire ticket was 014...
Original itinerary was:
Lis->Madrid (Tap Air Portugal)
Madrid->Montreal (Air Canada)
Montreal->Halifax

The connection in Madrid was always a very tight one, only 1hr 20 mins. Our TAP flight out of LIS was delayed leaving the ground by 20 mins (without explanation) but the pilot said that we would make up 15 mins of that time in the air, but when we were about 30 mins outside of MAD he came on and said due to air traffic constraints we were put in a holding pattern for about 25 mins (I guess cause we missed our allocated spot for landing). To make a long story short, once we landed, we sprinted to the gate, and arrived 13 mins before take off and the gate agents refused to let the 6 of us board (J passengers), stating that the gate was closed, even though we could still clearly see activity in the gangway which proceeded for the next 15 mins or so. Frustrating as that is, they would not let us board, or even make a call to the plane to see if they could make an exception, ugh!

4 of the 6 were rebooked on another AC flight to YUL (as that was their final destination) that day out of Lis, but my wife an I were not rebooked until the next morning as our final destination was Halifax. TAP provided us with a hotel/meals etc, but the rebooked us via London Heathrow on IBERIA (which just has regular business, not signature (PODS), which we paid for. A few questions:

I spent a lot of time arranging these specific flights and a lot of money (full fare J) and was very disappointed to be not in a pod for part of our travel home.
1. Since TAP arranged for alternate route back to Canada and they used a non Star Alliance partner (Iberia) for a portion of the return, I'm assuming that the SQM, SQS and SQD for that portion just disappears?
2. Am I entitled to any compensation for being rebooked in non-signature for that leg of the return trip?
3. Since I did not arrive home until 22 hours later, am I entitled to the $1000 CAD per person compensation, or is it different while in Europe?
4. If eligible, who should I file for compensation with, TAP Air Portugal or Air Canada?
5. To top it off, our baggage did not arrive to our house until the morning after we arrived home, any compensation available for that?

In conclusion, I'm actually not that jaded about the way the journey home happened, I just don't want to leave anything on the table if I'm entitled to compensation. Spending over 5 figures for flights is significant for use for a personal expense!

Thanks again folks!
