Hotel U14 is the best full-benefit Bonvoy hotel in Helsinki proper because it’s the only one in its category. Admittedly, there’s plenty to like here, but it’s not perfect and in a different paradigm (of increased competition), could be criticized more thoroughly. Here are my impressions and photos:

Pros:
  • Upgraded to a Luxe room more than several days in advance - day of arrival, no higher room type showed as available for my 2 nights - same thing was said proactively to me at check-in
  • Bed is quite comfortable - despite having what appears to be a cot mattress - the mattress is quite plush, covers are insanely plush and fluffy, and pillows are generally good quality (the larger ones are too firm IMO, but the smaller ones are better for sleeping on IMO as they are a tad softer)
  • Room design is nice, and I like the hippo
  • Couch is comfortable
  • Staff was friendly - didn’t have a single cold interaction
  • Offered late checkout - which I didn’t need due to my flight schedule
  • Welcome gift of lots of wrapped chocolates (plain, mint, and hazelnut (ew)), drink voucher (could bring my cider to the room), single bottle of water, and keychain
  • Breakfast (more in Cons) - what is available on the buffet for Elites is tasty with good-quality scrambled eggs, well-cooked bacon, and good cream cheese frosted cupcakes

Cons:
  • View is just bad - nothing they can do here
  • Shower pressure was weak
  • I didn’t like the smell of the toiletries, and the body wash was hard to get out of the pump
  • I don’t like this out of principle - no made-to-order options at breakfast - during weekends, you can pay 10 euros for an omelet or 10 euros for pancakes - really, I’ve had more generous breakfast offerings in the US. This doesn’t match what I would expect for Europe, but maybe, Finland is a different beast. I didn’t see anyone nearby paying for these options, so I chose to abstain out of principle and because I need to see something being really good before I pay a 10 euro supplement.

This is probably a better hotel than Hilton Helsinki Strand, so I would come back out of necessity.
