This is how it has always worked. SWUs are not based on revenue seats being available.
Nothing has changed here except the advance upgrade space has progressively gotten harder to find over time. This has been going on for a decade.
Why would you spend 5000 USD on coach tickets? Buy the cheap ones and waitlist on that.

Get an Expertflyer membership and start looking for flights. JFK-BCN, CLT-MUC, DFW-FRA are some of the easier ones to find space on.
