I can’t speak to OP’s memory, and unfortunately, the relevant CPU page uses JavaScript in a way that isn’t captured by the Wayback Machine, so I can’t pull the old text from it, but here’s a decade-old thread about Northern South America; Quito was on the CPU list then: What counts as Northern South America for CPU Purposes? . The only reason they would have removed it would be if they were going to make it a Polaris route, which it certainly is not. (Edit: I guess they removed it just for giggles). So now I’m curious about Guyana; I would have assumed CPU-eligibility based upon “Northern South America,” but as that apparently hasn’t been the rule for several years, I guess it’s up in the air.

Here is similar text from the Polaris page:
United Polaris is available on trans-Pacific or trans-Atlantic flights, and on flights from the U.S. to these South American destinations: Buenos Aires, Lima, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Santiago. All other international routes are United Business® and include use of the United Club: Guam, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, Colombia and Ecuador.
Note that it, too, omits Guyana, but it’s based upon the same logic: they tried to list out “Northern South America.”

Perhaps OP often travels with multiple non-Premier companions?

I’m sure they will, but I’m not sure to what extent I’d really care — if I’m flying those routes, I’m connecting to/from the US and therefore using PlusPoints. For the same reason, CPUs on those routes will be extremely rare.
