NZ didn't even send the plane to YVR.
Given the amount they would have saved on jet fuel by cancelling AKL-YVR then YVR-AKL it's not as if they can't afford compo.
The plane didn't make it to YVR because it was broken.
The question is whether this meets the definition of something within the control of the airline for them to be liable for compensation under that Canadian law.
