If you have less risk tolerance than I do, then book the 3 hour connection, because that way if you miss the LAX-SFO flight, or it’s delayed, you have more cushion.
Showing up early to use the LAX lounge and
then risking the tight-on-separate-tickets connection at SFO would never enter my decision matrix.

Agree. The only airline lounge I’ve ever been in that I’d even consider adjusting my flight timing to visit is the TK lounge at IST… and that was at the old airport, haven’t been through the new one.
