I guess that depends whether a broken plane falls under the category of an incident within an airlines control, or outside their control. Reading the policy if it's outside their control they don't need to pay you anything.
NZ didn't even send the plane to YVR.
Given the amount they would have saved on jet fuel by cancelling AKL-YVR then YVR-AKL it's not as if they can't afford compo.
