What would I do? I’d book the 90 minute connection, get to LAX late, get irritated about all of the traffic around the LAX loop, and barely make it to the flight before the boarding door closed. There are no airline lounges in the US that I’d arrive at the airport early for, and precious few worldwide. I’d also be watching the LAX-SFO flight like a hawk, because on separate tickets I’d have to be prepared to show up for an earlier flight if it looked like mine was going to take a delay.
If you have less risk tolerance than I do, then book the 3 hour connection, because that way if you miss the LAX-SFO flight, or it’s delayed, you have more cushion.
Showing up early to use the LAX lounge and
then risking the tight-on-separate-tickets connection at SFO would never enter my decision matrix.
