So if what the OP is correct, then gate staff may have suggested it was an official departure time change, not that it was simply them leaving the gate early because all boarding/paperwork was complete.

All in all, it's always the same story of what happens when trying to cut fine margins while trusting the system is giving the right info (which countless stories show it often doesn't). Far too many times this catches people. Yet frequent travellers often turn their nose up at travellers arriving at gates "early".. The amount of stories like that just show why it's not so silly...
