Additionally there were bars where the front was open, shutters of some sort I guess, so you were inside but with an entirely open ‘wall’ to the street, and there was definitely ‘inside’ smoking there.

What I can offer is that upon opening suitcase once home there was distinct tobacco smoke smell, something I’d not noticed on clothes since the 1980’s I’d guess.
