Can the lead passenger make a single claim on behalf of everyone (which could include shared duty-of-care costs such as 1 hotel rom for 2 passengers), or does each passenger have to make their own claim ?
In terms of the law, each passenger claims and receives compensation and reimbursements for themselves alone. Children under 18 can claim via parents or those with parenting responsibilties (to simplify a complex area). EC261 doesn't handle or make reference to groups of passengers, and that's also true of APR, the UK's equivalent regulation.

BA seems to be OK for the lead passenger to claim on behalf of all the other passengers in the PNR. There have been pushbacks where the surname of a passenger is different to the lead passenger, and in that situation personally I would make separate claims for each surname but then cross reference them in the text box.

For reimbursement - as opposed to compensation - payment by BA is usually made to the card that made the original booking, so however it is done, it will end up in the same place. Depending on the details this may or may not be correct, but this is what happens.
