I recently stayed at the MO and Passalacqua and have previously stayed at Il Sereno and the Hilton Lake Como. I can say that you should probably not stay at the MO in April. For one, the utterly stunning 40m long floating pool is completely unheated - I wouldn't stay there outside of July and August. Sadly, the pool was entirely unusable when I went in September, even though it was still pretty warm. Not a single person at the hotel was able to get in. On the other hand, Il Sereno, which is just down the street is a massive step up with regards to the hard product and the pool is heated to over 90 degrees, or at least it was when I was there in September 2021. While the MO photographs really well, because it is housed in the old Casta Diva resort, the decor feels remarkably inconsistent in real life. The old structures have been remodeled to be fairly new, with little history kept, but at the same time, its not entirely new, its sort of remodeled in a slap dash fashion. There are a number of old passage ways, restaurants and murals scattered about the property, all with very low ceilings and no history - everything feels like it's from the 70s. Finally the rooms are generally housed in a large building that feels like it is also from the 70s with 8 foot ceilings. If I didn't know better, I would have thought I was in a JW Marriott rather than an MO. The bathrooms though are truly stunning, but everything else in the room, is so simple and plain, it is forgettable. Service was great, but the hard product was just too bad and the pool too cold to be worth anything close to what they are charging. It made Passalaqua feel like an absolute steal. Unfortunately, Passalaqua does not seem suitable for kids, and while I didn't see any families at Il Sereno, it is a completely different level from the MO and there is no age limit there I think. This is a bit odd, but I rank every hotel I've been to and I rank Passalaqua #20, Il Sereno #40, the MO at #96 and then the Hilton at #176. My rankings do not include price in the criteria, it is just based on the quality of the stay. Ironically, the Hilton's pool has a lovely view of the lake and is heated to 90 degrees. I can provide more thoughts on my stay at Il Sereno if interested.
