Isn't that the case whenever we deal with non-native English speakers? For example, we are accustsomed to using idioms, most of which are completely baffling to non-English speakers.

Here's another that took me a while to get used to. Someone says, "You're not going, are you?" We answer "No" if we're not going. But foreigners for whom English was not their first language answer "Yes". Yes, as in, "Yes, your statement is correct. I'm not going." I live in Thailand, and it was quite some time before I got used to this.
