I know people have reasons - but these things are a hell of a lot easier if you have T-mobile as your carrier.
All plans have free SMS and 25 cent per minute roaming calls. You can use an eSIM and Google Voice as well, but there is no danger of accidentally roaming and having some big charge show up on your bill at home. And most of the plans have some form of free data. It also solves the SMS from bank issues as you will receive those texts for free on the T-mobile SIM.
