An update - when I went to use the QR Code this morning, I saw that for the tip to go to the actual room attendant, I needed to enter her name in the “search” bar at the top. (Which explains why she had included her name on the card). Checking “housekeeping” appeared to send the tip just to that department in general, not to her.
In addition, while the Courtyard where I first encountered this explicitly said the hotel would pay any convenience or other fees for using this method, this one did the opposite - it had a box automatically checked to add an additional amount (in my case, 46 cents) to cover a fee so the attendant would get the full amount of the tip. (You could uncheck this box if you wanted).
So I’d recommend being careful when using one of these - clearly they don’t all work the same way.
I'm wondering if the one that showed all fees/tips was in California. I've seen this example at the Westin Pasadena, and while I don't like tipping, I can respect this method when I don't have a lot of cash on hand (and I usually don't).
I saw this somewhere else (don't remember the property) but there was an added convenience fee, which I
did not appreciate.
