The competitiveness of BA, or indeed other UK airlines, never seems to feature as a counterweight to the UK Government's determination to increase an already high tax every time the budget comes around.
BA's home market has a choice as well here with AF, KLM etc.
The point is the government wants to raise more money. If it taxes people who live in the UK taking
direct flights from the UK to wherever, they can do this without changing passenger behaviour very much. On the other hand, by taxing connecting passengers, these passengers are far more sensitive to the change and have far more options. If you’re connecting anyway, you may as well do it for cheaper connecting in Paris, Amsterdam, Madrid, etc.
