If there is a "sweet spot" for upgrades, then it surely means the price/demand for that flight is low, so then it surely also means that you could have just bought an award ticket outright with miles for the cheapest possible price.

Unless you are saying that they are now offering ridiculously cheap upgrade offers (like this recent post where the OP believed they could redeem from W to J on LAX-CDG for 10,000 miles!)
