I recently had an issue with this. I booked two rooms, one with a 5 night stay using points, and the other a 3 night stay but only paid for one. I absolutely understand that we cannot count nights for the second room, but it's still mind-boggling to me that you can't get points for the money you paid for the second room. I did email Bonvoy about this and pleaded via X as well (usually the folks on X are quite kind), but even the latter said there are no exceptions to this. As a Lifetime Plat, I felt that at a minimum they would tell me that they would make a one-time exception for this, which of course would be the reasonable thing to do. They decided that it's a no, so I cancelled some reservations (and I made Titanium Elite this year), as I every so often would pay more to stay at a Marriott because of the program.
I can't say I would never stay at one again especially if the hotel is cheaper and/or more convenient, but I may also cancel my credit card at this point (I am still mulling over whether I should do that). What I can say is I will minimize my business with Marriott after so many nights spent (with SPG mostly).
Apologies for the rant, but I just wished that the system would have a message that says that I won't get points (or even at check-in). Something...
Its annoying. This is why when I book 2 rooms I often book a P1 and P2 room. Even if its different earnings and benefits, at least its something. The other person can than transfer the points to you since you paid.
