On separate tickets, you may have to collect your bags at HND and take them to the AA counter
If you had chosen JAL for HKD-HND then JAL at HKD would tag bags through to AA ( even on separate tickets)

Thanks for response. Would indeed have gone JAL except for timing of the flight. I am *Gold but I think that just gets me 2x20kg on the domestic leg. Am trying to figure out how much it would cost if I have 46kg (2x23kg)
