I think a lot of people here would rather find a little neighborhood trattoria than eat at McDs in Rome. Of course, this community isn’t exactly representative of the traveling public in general.
Personally I would rather see 15 more Hyatt Places scattered around Europe than one more all-inclusive on an island with three others, just to give me options in locations where there are no or few options.
From that angle, it is a different mode of travel and unlike a HC, HP, or PH. Less decision-making, less uncertainty about the required travel budget.
I don’t think it’s
that hard to plan a budget for a trip to a beach destination and stick to it without prepaying for everything via an all inclusive. In fact, I might be overpaying if I went the all inclusive route:
- I would drink a lot less alcohol than they (the resort) budgeted for the rate I paid
- I would probably try some outside restaurants while out exploring.
- I would not want to eat mountains of food three or four times a day to get my money’s worth
