I have a flight on BA/AA where I have ended up with an overnight layover as a result of AA cancellations.

Can I check bags in London all the way to my final destination, if my (LAX) layover is overnight? I realise I need to collect bags and clear customs at LAX, but just wondering whether I can check bags to final destination? and if so, whether it is worth the risk given the opportunity for AA to lose them?
