Phone numbers on caller ID can be spoofed.

Initiating the call and then asking the recipient of the call to prove who they are is backward. Data protection needs to work in both directions.

I always refuse to disclose anything to the caller, beyond my name, unless they are able to prove who they are by answering my questions first. I'm happy to call the company back on a published number to follow up.

I've had my electric supplier call me and ask for payment with a credit card over the phone after asking me to prove who I was by asking questions and refusing to answer my questions unless I gave them information first. Not a chance.
