Free seat selection is not a Star Alliance Gold benefit. This is also true for Lufthansa. You may have booked a fare class that includes seat selection, but that would be free regardless of your Star Alliance status. EVA has those fare classes as well. (Easy way to tell, if you got a free checked bag on Lufthansa, then your fare likely came with a seat. Lufthansa's cheapest fare is even exempt from the Star Alliance baggage benefit.)
