I seem to recall (maybe it's poor memory, or just a Delta thing) that sometimes changing a booking means the whole trip is rebooked and it can be more than just dropping a leg. Or maybe I'm completely wrong.
Any help would be appreciated!
Any time your ticket is not to your intended destination, there is some risk during IRROPS. In this case, it sounds like that risk is minimal: if your son has to get rebooked and ends up going through a different gateway, he'd still get to where he needs to be. Any checked luggage will go to the ticketed destination airport.
