This benefit clearly states that it is to be used for airfare. If it works for any gift cards it's a loophole just like UA TB works as a loophole for the incidental airline fee on the Plat cards and also works for this $50 because it codes as a fare. Obviously, this should not be called out to Amex because it just ends up ruining it for everyone else.
The Wiki clearly states that Delta gcs do not work because they are processed through cashstar so there was no point in buying that for this credit nor in calling Amex to try and get the credit.
There are currently DPs only for AA and AS gift cards being reimbursed automatically, as per the wiki.
