I looked into this feature recently, I was booking a family room round trip from Austin to LA . I was 11k short on points, the cash and points option would cost just over $1k and use every point I had. It was cheaper to purchase the points I needed for about $350 (they have a bonus deal going on for buying points which seems very common) and I had a few points left over.
