That's what I personally do - all cards are used in one single account to add funds to it, we don't do any gifting and no issue receiving the credit.
Curious, did you use P2 CC in your UATB recently? The only reason I went the gifting route was because the transaction would always get declined (it never used to be a problem).
It seems like something changed in Oct where United won't let you use a CC not under your own name to load your TB.
