I never minded either way. I was quite happy to have purloined the Telegraph Cryptic Crossword and sit doing it quietly.

As an add-on why is it that everyone seems to have their phones on loudspeaker and are seemingly impervious to others being inconvenienced by their conversations? What was wrong with holding the dashed thing up to their ears?
My other half explained this to me the other day when I asked the same thing. It is learned behaviour from reality TV shows such as that American family with the children who are models / the stepfather who was a decathlete but is now a different gender. They do that on their programme so that people can see their lips move / the sound recordist can pick up what they are saying / viewers can see their great teeth / etc. It then leached into internet podcasts, self-recorded videos and now everyone under a certain age does it.

I try and relax but if they get really annoying and overly loud I just ask the person doing it to stop their press conference because I'm not interested. But it doesn't help, even if it makes me feel better.
