This is 100% plausible ... I know, because it happened to me years ago. Was in the pointy end of a 757, had no idea my phone had slipped out of my pocket and into the seat. Tried to recline it, heard a CRUNCH and knew right away I had a problem. Called over the FA; we found the phone in the seat hinge, shaped like a V. Supremely lucky it didn't puncture the battery.
Problem is ... I was flying home from SFO, and happened to pick up the brand new iPhone 6S Plus while I was out there. Was but 3 days old. Landed at EWR, called every Apple store in the vicinity, and found exactly one replacement in stock within 150 miles ...
... and that, friends, is how I ended up with a pink iPhone.
