AA has allowed using miles to for seat assignments (MCE, preferred seats) at 1c per mile for years. How is this any different?

Of all the doom and gloom scenarios, if AA just allows paying buy-up fees for miles at 1c/mile, quite honestly I'm shocked how that hasn't been enabled yet. If people want to spend their miles on that, be my guest. More award seats for me.
