I recently booked an overnight business class flight from Perth to Sydney. The cost was outrageous ($4,200 one way) but I had a busy week ahead and needed to get some sleep. I foolishly assumed the plane would be an A330 and the seat would be similar to ones I'd flown on many times to Asia, especially given the price of the ticket, overnight flight, and cross-country distance. Alas no - in the Qantas plane lottery, I didn't get lucky...it was an A737. The "business class" seat was really a premium economy seat which barely reclined, the lights stayed on for half of the flight and the prison-style blanket did little to guard against the arctic cabin temperature.
For fun, I had a look to see how the cost of a similar seat (PE) on a return flight to London would cost. The answer: this Perth one-way flight cost nearly 7x the cost per flying hour as a PE seat to London and back. I'm really struggling to understand how Qantas can justify something like that.
Yes, in today's age where we all accept Qantas's habit of misconduct has reached all time highs, I know I'm the idiot for continuing to hope that they'll stop abusing their customer's trust. In answer to my first question, I suppose I am just disappointed.
Does anyone think we will get the old Qantas that we used to love back??
Buyer beware I’m afraid. Always check that what you have booked be it flight or hotel is what you are actually prepared to put up with.
As others have mentioned many carriers in Europe do similar length flights in Y seating with a blocked off middle seat and call that Business class.
If you are savvy it’s possible to get a lie flat seat and maybe even an F lounge lunch/dinner prior to a B787 to PER. I try to plan in advance when I need to go and tack them onto an Int ticket.
QF has no competition on this route as VA has no wide bodies
