If you're happy just travelling Skyteam, you can easily find flights on China Eastern to Amsterdam with the last leg on KLM, sometimes involving long/overnight layovers in China, starting from around A$7,400 from various online travel agencies
Thanks for the effort you went to.

I'm actually flying from Brisbane and the end destination will be Aberdeen. Flying into Glasgow or Edinburgh is always an option, although I've wished I didn't on the few times I've done just that. I'll look at them. I'll be travelling with an elderly relative who's not very mobile and who has a very western only palate. I don't know if that'll make much difference. But thanks again for the suggestion.
