The SeatGuru and AA maps show 5 9-seat rows in front coach (rows 20-24) plus 1 4-seat row (row 25), whereas the seat selection diagrams show 7 9-seat rows (rows 20-26) and 1 4-seat row (row 27). However, no seats in row 20 are available, which seems somewhat suspect. So I'm guessing it's one additional row (9 seats) added, with some renumbering.
With this in mind, am I better off (in terms of seat pitch and general comfort) getting a seat in the rear economy section?

The consensus appears to be that the coach seats aft of row 31 (exit row) are better in terms of pitch than the forward cabin. The changes you mentioned are the result of removing one row of J on the coffin-equipped 777s and the corresponding enlargement of the forward coach cabin so that the Y and J configurations are the same on the Flagship Suite 777s and the Coffin 777s.
LRTC begins on the 777s in October.
